When you see the name HEMI® on some of the models for sale at Sid Dillon, you might wonder what a HEMI® engine is. A HEMI® engine is a world-class powerplant under the hood of select models on our lots. They deliver more power and torque than traditional engines like a V6 or V8. Read our guide to the benefits of a HEMI® engine to learn more. We’ll also tell you about what the difference is between a HEMI® and a V8 so you can determine which performance specs you favor.
First, you might be surprised to learn that the HEMI® engine is not a new invention. It was invented by Chrysler back in the 1950s when engineers were trying to minimize heat loss in the engines at the time. They designed the HEMI® engine to improve the design of traditional powerplants.
The name HEMI® comes from the word “hemispherical,” which describes the shape of the combustion chamber. The hemisphere in each combustion chamber allows it to generate more power for each cylinder, giving your vehicle an extra boost.
At the time the HEMI® engine was invented, vehicles were mainly equipped with flathead engines. With a flathead engine, there’s far more surface area that loses heat, which reduces the power. HEMI® engines, on the other hand, pack this punch of extra power with their innovative design. So, the main difference between a HEMI® and a V8 revolves around the shape of the cylinder heads. Another main difference is the placement of spark plugs on the top-center of the combustion chamber rather than slightly off-center in V8 engines.
The benefits of a HEMI® engine are so much more than an improved design. What is a HEMI® engine going to bring to your driving experience? From more performance to reliability, you have a lot to look forward to:
